Hansraj Saxena is Chief Operating Officer - Sun Pictures of Sun NetworkA mob of nearly 100 people who claimed to be supporters of a senior executive of a media group ransacked The Checkers Hotel on Anna Salai in Guindy Tuesday night, forcing guests staying there to run for cover.
The mob was reportedly looking for the owner of the hotel who they claimed was sheltering a friend after he had beaten up the media executive in an incident sparked by road rage on East Coast Road early Sunday morning.
The mob claimed that they were supporters of Hansraj Saxena, chief operating officer of Sun Pictures, part of the Sun Group owned by Kalanidhi Maran, brother of Union minister Dayanidhi Maran.
“They came in 30 autorickshaws without number plates and started smashing the glass panels in the front of the hotel. They damaged flowerpots, smashed cars parked near the entrance tore sofas in the lobby,” said an employee of the hotel who witnessed the attack around 11 pm on Tuesday.
Five people were arrested in connection with the attack. However, Mr Saxena told this newspaper that he had nothing to do with the incident. “I have nothing to do with this,” he told
Deccan Chronicle on Wednesday. "Somebody is trying to tarnish my image."
A senior police officer said a case had been registered based on a complaint from the hotel management and a probe is underway.
Sources said Mr Saxena was travelling to Chennai in his car on ECR when three youngsters allegedly attacked him after his car grazed their vehicle.
Two groups of men, claiming to be Mr Saxena's friends, went to the houses of two of the youngsters in Thiruvanmiyur Sunday morning. "They beat up the youngsters and damaged the cars parked in front of the two houses," the officer said.
"The gang was searching for Mr Saxena's third assailant and went to Checkers thinking that the owner of the particular hotel was sheltering the boy."
The police arrested Vadivel, Venkitesan, Arun, Ravi and Krishnamoorthy for the hotel attack.
